Miguel Romero is a professor of theatrical set design at the University of Massachusetts.
Born in Cuba, Miguel Romero worked as an assistant to Ming Cho Lee for three years after earning his BFA in Scenic Design from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He assisted Ming on Shakespeare-the-Park productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival / Joseph Papp Public Theater and Boris Godunov at the Metropolitan Opera. He joined the faculty of the Theater Department of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1993 where he recently directed and co-authored Archipelago of Delight, a musical with puppetry. In addition to designing UMass productions such as Our Country's Good, he has been a frequent guest scenic designer at Williams College. He recently designed Richard III for Shakespeare and Company; Kiss Me, Kate for Geva Theatre; A Christmas Carol for City Stage; Jitta's Atonement and Four of a Kind for Berkshire Theatre Festival; as well as South Pacific for Barrington Stage Company.
After designing for New York-based companies including The Public Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company and Playwrights Horizons, Romero designed extensively for opera and ballet productions.
His work was represented in the Silver Award-winning U.S. exhibit at the 1991 Prague Quadrennial. A contributor to The Puppetry Journal, Romero is active in American and international puppetry organizations. He recently returned from a sabbatical studying puppetry and mask making in Japan and Indonesia.
